A Gel Plate Texture Tool

Did you know that Lace makes a great texture tool to use with your Gel Press Plate.  Whether you use Lace Ribbon, Paper Lace Tape or Doilies you can create a unique background/print with great textural interest.

Pressing the lace items into the paint layer that has been applied to the Gelli Plate soaks up/sticks to the paint so when you remove the lace the paint lifts from the Gel Plate leaving the pattern of the lace behind.  You then get a textured print on your chosen paper used to take the print.

I love random play and experimentation to see what interest I can create on my prints.  I also work with layering the various designs and different colors over each other.  Today the heat was a factor so the ability to take ghost prints was limited due to the paint drying rather quickly on the plate.  When working with items that are smaller than the plate and you wish to imprint the texture or pattern to get I always work with a piece of thinner paper such as tissue paper to press the pattern into the plate, and any exposed paint that may come through the pattern holes etc may be captured by this piece keeping your fingers somewhat clean.

The Paper Lace Tape has a plastic backing which also adds a outline to the pattern when pressed into the plate and comes in various designs.  I cut this into pieces and layered in rows like brickwork onto part of the plate to take a print.  I also played a bit with cutting up the paper doily into wedges too.  You will see the results further below in this post.

Here's a look at some of the print achieved playing with lace today!

For me creating is all about the play, experimentation and process so the thought of what to do with the Lace which is our team is featuring this month was all about the PLAY.  Next is to play with these prints and see how I end up using them.

I hope you find some time to play and connect with your creativity in the lead up to Christmas!

Handy Tip for Artists, Recyclers and Neat Freaks! I have a follow-up to the Citra-Sol method for creating fabulous background pages and collages.   I bought a big bag of navel oranges and realized I had the ingredients to make my own solvent!   Simply take a clean glass jar, peel the rind from the oranges and place all the rind/peels, without the pulp (tangerines, oranges, navels) into the jar.   Pour enough vinegar over the peels to cover them.    Allow the jar to sit for a week or two and VOILA!     You have made your own solvent for literally pennies.    You will notice the liquid getting a bit thicker than the plain vinegar and it does not smell bad!!! I now have a  HUGE jar on the window sill!       Be careful and only use this after testing on a safe spot.
