Peace Love and "Rescue"

So, have you been hearing about Creativation 2017?  Well, Altered Pages was there!  This is the most exciting show in the arts and crafts industry and it happened this past weekend in beautiful Phoenix, AZ.

There was so much to look at and take in (which you hopefully have seen over the last few days here on our blog.)  Networking with other artists and crafters was such a joy.  This certainly is one fun group of folks and some names you might recognize like Tim Holtz, Cathie Fillian, Mark Montano, Carolyn Dube and Dyan Reaveley.  There was even a David Tutera spotting.  The show floor was huge and the festivities lasted for days, so this is just a fraction of what I saw, but I hope it gets you excited for what is in store in the coming months here at Alteredpages.com.

It really is inspiring to be at the show.  Whether you are a mixed media artist, a painter, paper crafter, knitter, quilter, seamstress, stamper, scrapbooker or card maker there is something for all of us and Altered Pages is excited to bring this home and continue to help you alter your creativity!

First, let's introduce our Intern Gabriella.  She assists with our classes and some of the behind the scenes work.  She is also my beautiful daughter!  She was looking forward to this for days. Look at that smile, can you tell she is a bit excited to get going on the show floor?

The displays this year were beautiful, as always.  The time and effort vendors and artists alike put into this event is amazing.  This "create" sign was made entirely out of 1000's of beads, big beads, teeny tiny seed beads and every shape and size bead in between. The time and patience this must have taken deserves a standing ovation.
Here is Gabby with one of her favorites...Dyan Reaveley, famous  for her "Dylusions" line of stamps, spray inks, journals and paints.  I always enjoy time with Dyan, she is a real hoot and is just as genuine as her sweet smile would indicate.  This year she brought English chocolates across the pond for all of us (so yummy).
Prior to me snapping this picture of Gabby and Dyan.  Dyan stopped me and said, "wait I have to get my beanie on too and mine makes it look like I have horns". Mind you now that must be said with the best English accent.

Both Dyan and Dina Wakely have amazing new things coming out this year, including a great journal from Dina...her first art journal and it is amazing with added signatures, fabric paper, canvas, watercolor paper, etc. It was all rolled out at this show, as well as all sorts of other goodies from Ranger.

Here is Gabby participating in a session with Gel Press and the super fun instructor Carolyn Dube, famous for her giggly yet ever impressive YouTube gelly plate videos.  We had a ton of fun getting messy and covered in paints while pulling prints with the new "Impressables" gel plates.

Head honcho, Jean, Gabby and I had a fun session with ClearSnap making this cute altered tin.

We used their "Top Boss" ink pad for amazing blended results while stamping using the ColorBox Pigment Inks.  This combo created a great resist effect.  Final touches and assembly will take place after all the glitter, I mean dust settles.
Graphic 45's displays were jaw dropping and so inspiring,
as per usual.  This seamstress mannequin's dress was made entirely out of hundreds, maybe thousands of individual paper butterflies
and curled strips of G45 papers.
This pic and words just do not do it justice at all.
Here is another upcoming line of G45 papers,
Midnight Masquerade.  Again, the picture just does not do it justice.  The deep jewel hues are gorgeous!

And, just look at this skeleton key/clock also from G45.
This is the Olde Curiosity Shoppe line.
Um, I want it all!!!

We also attended a seminar on industry and color future trends.  This was presented by Pantone and one of the many topics we discussed was the Color of the Year for 2017 - Greenery.  A beautiful yellow green.
Be on the lookout for this color to continue to be everywhere. It isn't going away any time soon now that there is a Shrek 5 in the works.

One of the forcasted trends on the horizon is a term that will replace words like Recycle, Repurpose or Upcycle.  That new word is RESCUE and it has nothing to do with furry, four legged creatures in need of a home.  If you love thrift shopping, junk hunting and giving old things new life then this term applies to you!  Consider yourself a Rescuer!  Products made from reclaimed materials will be considered Rescued, no longer recycled.  I think this lends a special "all things have value" theme to repurposing and crafting.

Here is a sneak peak of my post for Tuesday of next week where I am working on a "rescue" of my own.  It is an old law book (that was destined for the trash heap) turned art journal.  I started on this a couple weeks ago.  You can see the beginning stages of that here on the Diydesignstudio.com blog.  Here is a little peak of the progress...

I hope you enjoyed my little recap of Creativation 2017.

Altered Pages will be going back to headquarters and processing every detail.  So be on the lookout for more inspiration and new products in the coming months.  We are excited to bring it all to you!
Thank you!
Stephanie S.

Handy Tip for Artists, Recyclers and Neat Freaks! I have a follow-up to the Citra-Sol method for creating fabulous background pages and collages.   I bought a big bag of navel oranges and realized I had the ingredients to make my own solvent!   Simply take a clean glass jar, peel the rind from the oranges and place all the rind/peels, without the pulp (tangerines, oranges, navels) into the jar.   Pour enough vinegar over the peels to cover them.    Allow the jar to sit for a week or two and VOILA!     You have made your own solvent for literally pennies.    You will notice the liquid getting a bit thicker than the plain vinegar and it does not smell bad!!! I now have a  HUGE jar on the window sill!       Be careful and only use this after testing on a safe spot.
