Whew - Who knew Thanks included so much FUN?

I sure hope everyone had as wonderful a Thanksgiving week as we did. I have no art for you due to all of  the  preparation  for family and friends and festivity.   But I do have photos of our first annual 'Pie Fest'. Yes, you may drool!   We had chocolate walnut pie, egg custard. pineapple chess pie, cherry cheesecake, raspberry galettes, lemon sunshine pie, pumpkin pecan and peanut butter cream pie.   All homemade and DELISH! A little cheese, a little wine, some fruits and we were off to a great evening.    As we all sat chatting I asked everyone to tell something that others may not know about them.   We had a person who lived through a tornado that leveled their town in Texas, one person had been a belly dancer, another was in a production of South Pacific.   It was so much fun learning things about friends! We also had a competition windmill softball pitcher and a winner in track events of the hurdles - and they were Females! Try this

Altered Spoon Art

It's Robin today wishing everyone a happy Friday!  I have a few altered spoons to share with you today.  What won't artists decorate, right?  These little wooden spoons make an adorable little canvas.   You can get a set of 5 at Altered Pages and create a bunch, too! I began by staining and painting the wooden spoons with various paints and inks .  The bare wood drank it in and needed minimal drying time.  I used a sponge dauber  to apply the dark green ink and it took the longest to completely dry.  I was probably a little heavy-handed.  The spoons come without holes in the handle so you can decorate the entire length.  I wanted to punch holes so I can hang them.  I used a Crop-A-Dile and it went through like butter! I chose three of these for projects today.  Let me start by saying that if I could do it over, I would make this spoon the other way around so that the angels were at the head of the "body"!  I already had the small square angel images and Dew

Gelli, Steampunk, Reindeer

This month at Altered Pages we are teaming up with  Smeared Ink and featuring some of their wonderful Steampunk inspired Digital Images.  I just couldn't resist choosing their very cute Brass Steampunk Reindeer and teaming it up with a Gelli Plate Background. Today I reached for my 5 x 7" Gelli Plate which is just perfect for creating backgrounds for cards and tags.  I wanted to create a Steampunk inspired background to go with the Reindeer Image.  So I grabbed out some chipboard gears and cogs I had on hand and after adding a coat of paint (a mix of Green and Red Fluid/Flow Acrylic) to the Gelli Plate, pressed these in like stamps to imprint the design, when you remove them the paint comes with it. I chose to work with papers for my card today from the Glitz  Joyeux Noel Papers  and used one of these to pick up my print.  The tiny polka dot design of the paper combined with the print taken from my Gelli Plate adds wonderful interest. I used another piece from

Thanksgiving is for the birds

I don't like Thanksgiving.  There. I said it.  I am Betsy Skagen , and you see, I find Thanksgiving booooooring. It stems from sitting through years of formal dinners in my childhood, where the mantra was "children should be seen and not heard." Since my closest sibling is six years older than me, these holidays got pretty lonely.  I know, I know, we are not exactly talking hardship here. But since I started this sad little tale, I might as well finish explaining why I don't like celebrating the American Thanksgiving.  Admittedly, mine are shallow reasons--nothing so noble as opposing the blatant romanticism of the pilgrim/Native American history. Nope, I don't like Thanksgiving because there is no gift giving to look forward to, Easter baskets to rummage through or fireworks to ooh and ahhh over. What's the point of handwashing all that china when there's no reward at the end?  The biggest cause for my disdain, however, m

It's The Most Wonderful Time of the Year Altered Spoons Canvas

Hi everyone.  Barbara here with my Altered Pages DT post using these adorable  wooden spoons .  I decided to go out of my comfort zone, i.e., think outside of the box.  My first thoughts were to decorate the spoons as just that, spoons, but then I decided to use them as architectural elements instead.  I must say, I am quite happy that I did. Cover an 8x10  Canvas Panel  with  Burlap  using  Aleene's Tacky Glue .  Spread gold crackle paste through a stencil, keeping edges uneven for that artsy look. Allow the paste to dry and crackle naturally on the canvas. Mix one drop of Blue  Splash Inks  into an  Ultra Fine Mist Sprayer , fill sprayer with water, and randomly mist the light blue color over the canvas, concentrating on the gold stenciled areas for contrast. Paint three  Wood Spoons  with  Timeless Cream chalk paint  and let dry.  Use a spatula to spread white crackle paste over one side of the spoons and allow to dry naturally to form the best crackling effect.
